The psychological phenomenon where a reader becomes so absorbed in a story that their attitudes and beliefs shift to align with the narrative.
Narrative Transportation is a research-backed phenomenon where people become so immersed in a story that they lose awareness of the real world and their attitudes shift to match the narrative.
First described by psychologists Melanie Green and Timothy Brock in 2000, narrative transportation explains why stories are more persuasive than arguments. When transported, people are less likely to counter-argue because their critical faculties are occupied by the story.
This is why case studies outperform feature lists. Why founder stories build more trust than certifications. Why a thirty-second story ad is remembered longer than a thirty-second product demo.
The key variables: vivid imagery, identifiable characters, and suspense. All three increase transportation. Data and logic decrease it. not because they're unimportant, but because they activate a different mode of processing.
Transportation is strong precisely because it bypasses rational evaluation. This creates an ethical obligation: the stories we tell should be true. Persuasion through narrative is legitimate. Manipulation through fabricated narrative is not.
